It’s Never Game Over
September 04, 05:22 PM

This is the blog that I’ve been dreading for a while now. How could I sum up 5 years into one blog? I decided I would just have to spit it out – I am officially stepping down from the Frag Dolls. My decision to leave has been long overdue as my full-time position at Ubisoft has prevented me from being more active on the team. But don’t worry, I will still be around - blogging about other things like fashion, lurking in the FD forums as much as I did before (go ahead community members, laugh), and I will be wearing my FD shirt for the last time at PAX this weekend.  It’s really bittersweet to let go of something you’ve been part of since the beginning, but I realized that it was time. For those of you who weren’t around for the original Frag Doll casting call, let me say that we had it easy. The remaining original members of the group - Brookelyn, Valkyrie, Rhoulette and myself can definitely testify to how relatively “easy” our casting was compared to what we put candidates through now. Five years ago, my friend sent me a craigslist posting specifically looking for female gamers. I thought I was perfect for the job and applied right away. I had played games since I was six – everything from Mario and Tetris Attack to Winning Eleven and Halo – I played it all. …

Emily Ong’s passion for gaming started at the mere age of six when her dad brought home an Intellivision II console system. As a child, she played classics such as Burger Time and Donkey Kong Jr. and later shifted to computer games on the Amiga 2000, playing titles such as One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird, Marble Madness, and The Seven Cities of Gold. With the release of the NES and her first step on the Power Pad, she knew she would be hooked on gaming for years to come. Little did she know that her childhood and teenage pastime on the computer and countless “wasted” hours of video gaming would eventually spawn a career in the video game and tech industry.

Ong took her interests in computers to the University of California, San Diego where she double majored in Computer Science as well as Mathematics Applied Science. An original member of the Frag Dolls, she was recruited when a friend referred her to Ubisoft’s job posting seeking out female gamers.  Looking at her mundane job in the Silicon Valley, she didn’t have to think twice before applying for the position. As part of the team, she is known as “Seppuku” and is a deadly combination of quick, smart and ninja-like stealth.

Since joining the Frag Dolls in 2004, Emily participated in most of their early tournaments, placing 1st in the PAX 2004 Rainbow Six: Black Arrow tournament, 1st in the PAX 2005 Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike tournament, and 1st at CPL 2006 in the Rainbow Six Vegas tournament. Since then, Emily has “semi-retired” from hard core tournaments, but still greatly enjoys some friendly competition with fellow gamers and friends.

When not playing video games, you can find Ong snowboarding in the mountains, collecting Star Wars toys on eBay, shopping, or hanging out with her two Cowboy Bebop inspired Welsh Corgis. She hopes that the Frag Dolls can make a positive impact on the gaming world and looks forward to what the future holds for pro-gaming.
