RANT: Game Breaking Glitches
Jan 28, 10:00 am

Throughout my history of video gaming, there are hundreds of games I have played and attempted to conquer. As an obsessive completionist, I usually try to finish every game, and if I really enjoy it, I will usually try to get it done to a 100%. While, over the years I have found a few things that will cause me to throw up my hands and call defeat on simply continuing a game such as lacking story, linear game play, unintuitive controls, etc., there is only one thing worse than calling quits yourself on a game: a game breaking glitch.

I have had a few experiences with game errors that have caused me to lose time played in a game, but never have I had a truly game breaking bug that would force me to restart the entire game after playing it for an extensive amount of time- until now.  It is with all that said that I turn my frustrated rant onto Sims 3 for the Xbox with my first ever experienced game breaking error.

The Sims has always been one of my favorite franchises and I have played all versions of it on PC and Xbox over the years. I love customizing my people and my towns while controlling their lives, making them happy, and watching them grow up are all little obsessions of mine. I have invested hundreds of dollars on all the expansions, custom items, and upgrading the games as they release.

I was truly excited when Xbox picked up Sims 3 as I love popping my achievements on this platform the most. I bought it the day it released and proceeded to obsessively work on accumulating all my goals. After creating and growing my little mini me family, I finally decided it was time to upgrade my pad and allow my kids to transition to teenagers so I could work on their next goals and achievements. It was shortly after I moved I began to have save errors that caused the game to freeze when I tried to save.

I kept losing a few hours here and a few hours there at various times when I saved my game. This was extremely frustrating to me as I would have to go back in and repeat the game as I had just played it. However bad I thought this was, it did not prepare me for the ultimate game breaker: eventually my game wouldn’t save at all… ever.  I have tried every single thing I could do so I could continue my family and, with close to a hundred hours invested in my sims, starting over is not an option.

Apparently this is a wide spread issue and why it has not been addressed by the developers and a fix released is beyond me. But an apparently common game breaking error like this is absolutely unacceptable in my eyes. And so, my Sim’s 3 for the Xbox will move to collect dust on my shelf, while I sit here and seethe with rage over not being able to finish something I love to play.

And that concludes my current rant and makes me ask you a question: Have YOU experienced a game breaking glitch?
