The latest evolution of the next gen gaming system, the MicroConsole for OnLive® Game Service, was finally released last month amidst the frantic holiday shopping season. For those of you that have been buried under a rock, OnLive® is the new on-demand video game platform that allows you to play select titles, purchased individually or by package, instantly over your broadband connection. While you have been able to play through your PC for a few months already, now gamers can play through their HDTV as well with the new MicroConsole. What does this mean exactly? Think Netflix for Video Games through any display you choose!
The system technology is pretty darn astonishing when you think of it and it will suffice for many gamers and families’ overall- especially once they increase their game title offerings. The typical gamer with the mentality of “I want it, and I want it right now” should certainly take notice and check it out to see if this system would fit their needs in the long haul. With the new system you may have to deal with the issues that sometimes arise in live streaming, such as lag and long loading screens, but this is mostly reliant upon your internet connection speed and the pacing of the game itself. Overall it works fine and as the technology improves of course it will work even better.
OnLive® Game system is currently being offered $99.00 for the MicroConsole TV Adapter, controller and one free game. Not a bad price point at all for any system comparison and the games are relatively cheaper since there is no physical product packaging. In an effort to introduce it’s product and get more subscribers, OnLive® has recently offered a PlayPack price that is $9.99 a month for unlimited play of all their titles- and it’s free right now for the holidays until January 15th!
As of now, here is a list of titles currently being offered and their prices. There are more games being offered here than most new system launches, but they are a mix of new games and older classics titles. As you can see, even this early in the game, there is most certainly a little something for everyone!
My thoughts: Easy, Cheap, and Instant Gaming. It is definitively a fit for the many gamers right now and for others to watch very closely. With the way everything is evolving and the success of all things instant through live streaming, this may indeed be the gaming of the future.
