10 Facts about Females and Gaming
Feb 26, 5:22 pm

So I am bored with no blog ideas once again and thought I would dig up some interesting facts about the video game industry and women (Morgan’s random facts about the Frag Dolls gave me the idea), since I know most people don’t ever read them. Keep in mind these are for all games to include casual and offline- not simply the people like us in the community that play competitively, online, and all the time. Also, I had to dig around the internet a very long time to find 10 facts about women and the industry, which itself blew my mind as I thought there was so much data out there for them.  Anyway, they are interesting even though I never really trust surveys unless it is a massive population that is used, and neither should you!  These are meant to give an idea of what’s happening with women in gaming and while some appear arguable, at least it gets you thinking! Happy Reading!

1. According to the ERA, Forty percent of all players are women; women over 18 years of age are one of the industry’s fastest growing demographics.  Today, adult women represent a greater portion of the game-playing population (33 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).

2. Fifty-six percent of online game players are male and 44 percent are female.

3. According to a survey conducted by Gametart, a game rental service in the UK, women that play games get more loving than those who don’t play. Out of a sample taken, the ones who gamed got fragged 1.1 more times a week than those who didn’t.

4. Research from America Online (AOL) has found that females over 40 years old spend the most time per week playing online games at 9.1 hours, which accounts for 41% of their connection time.

5. As per the World Winner Competition survey, both men and women are driven by the same force or factor which is desire to win over opponent sex and it was the number one response from both genders.

6. They also suggest women tend to seek out competition more often than men; 39 percent of the women replied that they look for a competition almost daily, on the other hand only 31 percent of men do. Majority of men which is 45 percent are happy going head 2 head just a few times per week.

7. World Winner survey also says 49 percent of men and 53 percent of women do believe that both genders men and women are equally competitive, on the other hand 45 percent of men and 35 percent of women view their male competitors as more competitive. Only 6 percent of men and 12 percent of women perceive females to be the more competitive opponents.

8. Research done by gaming firm Electronic Arts’ found that 40% of teenage girls played video games but, crucially, they seem to lose interest in a year.

9. According to another survey of 1000 people online, it claims more women own consoles then men. 44% of women and 39% males were said to own consoles in their home.

10. Though the number of women who play games is high, they represent fewer than 12 percent of the women that actually work in the industry, according to the International Game Developers Association.
