G4TV has been running a Video Game Deathmatch to determine the best video game franchise of all time. When I came along, The Legend of Zelda was going head to head with the Assassins Creed Franchise. To me this seemed like a no-brainer…Assassins Creed. So I threw up my vote and put a call out for everyone to do the same.

Little did I know, everyone was pulling for Zelda. Not only were they voting for Zelda they were chastising me for suggesting otherwise and went on to question my impeccable taste.

Is Legend of Zelda a better franchise than Assassins Creed? How could people possibly think this is so? I don’t get it? After all, Zelda is a baby’s game… right? I tried to play Twilight Princess and lasted for about 20 minutes. I just don’t understand why people go so crazy over these games. Is it perhaps a fond memory warped by time and skewed by misplaced nostalgia? That must be why I don’t have the same reaction to these games as everyone else...I didn’t play them as a child. I just couldn’t wrap my brain around it, so I started searching for answers.

I went to the most reliable source I could find…Wikipedia. Now the LOZ Wikipedia page is very impressive and apparently Legend of Zelda has had a remarkable run over the years.

It appears “Twilight Princess was named Game of the Year by X-Play, Game Trailers, 1UP, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Spacey Awards, Game Informer, GameSpy, Nintendo Power, and many other websites”. Game Informer even went on to awarded Twilight Princess a score of 10/10. “It was hailed as “a ‘masterpiece’, ‘genius’, ‘epic’, and the ‘game of the year’.” These are all website and magazines that I find to be credible sources. How could I, and my opinion of these games be that off base? What is wrong with me?

I went on to read that The Legend of Zelda series had been awarded “five world records in Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2008. These records include “Highest-Rated Game of All Time”, “First Game with a Battery Powered Save Feature”, and “Longest Running Action-Adventure Series”. The Legend of Zelda was first introduced to the world in 1986. That’s 25 years of winning fans, delivering games that people love and building a franchise.

I can see why people have a rabid devotion to this franchise.  It’s been with them longer than some of the clothes they own; it’s outlived their pets and relationships and it continues to grow with them over the years. That is a powerful bond. But can someone like me, who doesn’t have that connection to these games, find the same sense of allegiance? No way. I’m doomed because these games aren’t made for me; they are made for children and the children who have grown up with them. Is it possible for an adult to become a fan of this franchise late in life? I don’t know…if you’re out there show yourself. I wasn’t able to make the transition and I am a social gaming pariah because of it.

The Assassins Creed Franchise and Zelda are apples and oranges, but if you are going to compare their franchises where do you start? Zelda has a lengthier history behind it. But just because something has been around forever doesn’t make it better, it just makes it more famous. The fact that a relatively new franchise like Assassins Creed can give a 25 year old franchise a run for it’s money speaks volumes to me. Assassins Creed has won an equally impressive amount of awards and accolades from a lot of the same news outlets that praised Zelda.

Zelda and Assassins Creed both have characters that people love. Both of these games offer engaging stories lines that inspire, thrill and entertain. Both Franchises have gone on to expand their worlds to other media, including films, TV shows, comic books and novels. What Assassins Creed has that Zelda doesn’t is amazing next gen graphics and a cross platform market. The AC games are perhaps some of the most beautiful games ever made and the developers of the franchise continue to push the boundaries in technology and innovation. The Assassins Creed franchise is on the cutting edge of the video game industry and continues to inspire and set the standard for all others. But is that enough to be “The Best Franchise of All Time”? I guess not.

Zelda beat Assassins Creed and will move on to the next round. Ezio and Altaïr I’m sorry, you gave it your best shot. Whoever would’ve imagined that you’d get taken out by a glorified keebler elf.
