Wii all Move to Kinect
Oct 01, 8:00 am

With the popularity of the Wii and Nintendo’s success at selling video games to the casual market, it’s no wonder why Sony and Microsoft have jumped on the motion gaming bandwagon. Sony is now offering the PlayStation Move and Xbox will soon hope to get its gamers to go controller free and Kinect. Will these new peripherals entice Wii users looking for better graphics and hardcore gamers looking to get more exercise to “Move” and “Kinect”?

How many of you PS3 and Xbox owners are going to be getting these new peripherals? What about you Wii users?  What would it take for you to purchase a new system for your motion gaming?

For those of you just getting interested in motion gaming, which system are you going to go with? Will your choice be based on price, an allegiance to a particular console, the quality of the games being offered or how much open space you have in your TV room? Here are some of the facts to take into consideration when making your choice.

PLAYSTATION MOVE (available in stores now)
Move Motion Controller: $49.99
Playsation Eye Camera: $39.99

Navigation Controller: $29.99

Move bundled w/ Sports Champions game: $99.99
Move bundled w/ Sports Champions game and a PS3: $399.99
(The Navigation Controller is not included in any of the bundles)

PlayStation Move Features

Your every movement is registered by the motion controller’s advanced motion sensors and the PlayStation®Eye USB Camera

The Move controller has a dynamic color changing sphere using a RGB LED, vibration feedback, and an easy to use button interface.

You can use 2 Motion Controllers to track the movement of both hands and you can use up to 4 controllers at once. Like the PS3 controller, there is a built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Gaming in Blu-ray powered HD is very appealing.

There are currently 15 or so games for the Move available. The first party titles are priced around $40 each. The question is, are there any titles strong enough to “Move” consumers to invest in all this extra hardware?

XBOX KINECT (available 11/4/10)
Kinect Sensor bundled w/ Kinect Adventures game: $149.99

Kinect Elite bundle w/ Kinect Adventures game and the new Xbox 360 250GB Console: $399.99
Kinect Arcade bundle w/ Kinect Adventures game and the new Xbox 360 4GB Console: $299.99

Here are some of Kinects Features

Controller free gaming! When using Kinect, your body becomes the controller and there are no other remotes or accessories needed. (But the console bundles include 1 black wireless controller, an Xbox Live headset and a 1 month free gold membership to Xbox live.)

A color VGA motion camera with 640 x 480 pixel resolution at 30 fps to capture your movements clearly and track up to 4 players.

Kinect has a motorized swivel so the camera can track you as you move around keeping you in frame.

In addition to the 1:1 revolutionary full-body tracking, Kinect also offers Voice Recognition.

Like the PS3 Move there will be 15 Kinect games available at launch. These games are said to be priced around $50.

I would purchase the PlayStation Move if the right couple of games came along, but
for me, the choice comes down to console loyalty. I have and always will prefer Xbox for my gaming. I am looking forward to getting the Kinect.

For the longest time the question for me was . . . Would Kinect work with my old Xbox 360? Or would I need to get the new system? Well according to the fine print, Kinect will work with my existing 360. So if I didn’t want to upgrade to the slim I wouldn’t have to in order to enjoy some motion gaming.  Now the question is…Where’s the best place to put my coffee table when I want to play?
