The Envy of Barbra Streisand
Feb 11, 8:00 am

I have never been very girly. Growing up I was a tomboy. For the longest time I liked wearing baggy “guys” clothes. I hardly ever wore make up and still only wear it for work. I don’t get up in the morning and spend an hour or more getting ready. I can get ready in a few minutes. In fact, I sometimes forget to look in a mirror all day.

I have gotten better over the years. I have developed a love for designer clothes (even though I hate shopping). I now own two purses. I purchased my first curling iron last year and have pink wheels on my long board skateboard.

Becoming a Frag Doll has helped me be much more of a girly girl.  Maybe it’s because I now have more girl friends then I have ever had before. They help me express my inner geek in really girly ways. I am finding a healthy balance between, tomboy, geek and girly. However, one of the girly things I have always been into are my nails. I have really great nails. One of the many wonderful things passed down from my Mom and Grandmother.

An Oscar winning Production Designer went as far as to say that my nails “would be the envy of Barbra Streisand”. I thought to my self, “wow, I bet he knows Barbara Streisand”.  Turns out he did, he was later invited to give a lecture at my Film School. He taught for a whole hour about how much he hates her. Needless to say it was a very odd lecture. But she does have really long nails.

I grew up doing my own nails. It wasn’t until I gained my financial freedom did I start taking trips to the nail salon to have manicures and pedicures on a regular basis. At the salon I would always have fun and interesting things done to my nails. Charms and rhinestones were a norm. When I moved to Hawaii people made fun of me because I had these long tricked out nails. I didn’t care.

But once I started working full time as a hand double on movie and TV shows I was not allowed to have painted nails. (Since they were using my hands to match an actress’s hands for a particular scene) If my nails needed to be manicured or painted they would do it on set and provide the polish. I never got to double for some one with an awesome looking manicure. The look was mostly natural or very muted and boring. A few times I have had to clip off my long nails right there on the spot. Or peel them off to make them look like they have been chewed off.

But since I no longer do that job I am going to start indulging in my regular Mani Pedi salon visits and get my nails adorned with cool art. I want some serious nail candy that looks good enough to eat. Freedom of expression is a beautiful thing. A creative manicure or pedicure is just one more way to express one’s inner geek on the outside. Barbra Streisand, take notes.
