Super-Ultimate-Badass-Edition Obsession
Feb 26, 10:00 am
In the past we gamers have plucked down the extra cash to have our very own piece of the in-game universe. Buying something we could hold, look at, never open or play with, boast about and treasure forever. It seams like super-ultimate-badass-edition collectables are just getting better and better and more expensive.
But what is too expensive? When should we say enough is enough? Are we even capable of that? Is there a point at which it become ridiculous to over pay for a game just to have a collectable item to hang on your wall or sit on a shelf? I don’t know. I think as long as there are fans there are people willing to pay any price for a piece of their favorite games.
Which leads me to my next question, does it have to be a good game for you to spend the extra money? Would you, have you, purchased the super-ultimate-badass-edition to a crap game because the extras were too good to pass up? Here are some of our recent and most legend collector’s editions this industry has to offer.
The Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition:
* Fallout 3: game
* A Vault Boy Bobblehead: Enjoy your very own Vault Boy with this collector’s item direct from Vault-Tec.
* The Art of Fallout 3: This hardcover book features nearly 100 pages of never-before seen concept art and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists.
* The Making of Fallout 3: Get an exclusive, inside look at Bethesda Game Studios and the team behind the game with this special DVD.
* Vault-Tec Lunch Box: The entire package comes in a fully customized metal lunch-box.
I also have the Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition hard back game guide that I purchased separately.
GEARS OF WAR 2 Collectors Edition Exclusive bundle: $139.99
* Gears of War 2: the standard edition game (for $10 more dollars you could get the Gears of War 2 limited edition game).
* Replica Lancer - The Lancer is made by NECA, the same company that makes the Gears of War line of action figures. It comes with a removable “ammo clip” and adjustable side-handle, and when you pull the trigger, it produces a chainsaw noise.
Modern Warfare 2’ Prestige Edition: $149
* Modern Warfare 2: the hardened edition of the game
* Real night vision goggles with a collector’s stand
* Steel art book with metallic finish
* Game Manual and Token to download the original ‘Call of Duty.’
Halo 3: Limited Legendary Edition:
The final version was marketed as the “Legendary Edition”. The slipcover packaging unfolds into a large heavy-stock poster of Master Chief.

* Poster
* Interactive bonus disc - Bestiarum (on one of the DVD discs)
* Legendary DVD containing special content exclusive to the Legendary Edition
* A scale replica of the Master Chief’s helmet as a case for the three discs.
The UK also offered a limited edition Master Chief figurine that was only available to the first 1000 pre-orders.
AC2 Black Edition: (if this even exists)
For sale in PAL territories only for £69.99 – the set is packaged in a collectable black box with a unique authentic holographic signature.
* Rare “Master Assassin” upgrade Ezio figurine - this limited edition collectable figurine of Ezio wears an upgraded cloak, something Ezio only has access to in the advanced stages of the game.
* 3 in-game bonus quests - enter and explore the most prestigious moments of the Renaissance. Reveal mysterious unique artifacts hidden within their walls: Palazzo Medicis in Florence, Santa Maria Dei Frari and Arsenal Shipyard Warehouse in Venice.
* Conspiracy Book - this 64-page finely crafted leather style hardcover and parchment-finish page book brings together exclusive insights on the game art, story and background, direct from the developers of Assassin’s Creed II. Secret faces are also revealed from the game’s overarching conspiracy.
* Game Soundtrack by Jesper Kyd (British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominee for “2009 Best Original Score in a Game"). With videos of behind-the-scene interviews and e-goodies about Assassin’s Creed II.
Is it fair for them to have a limited release in certain territories? Do any of you have this? Is it even real?
Some games offer special in-game content as a way to seduce you. I always think those in-game items will eventually be available for download so why should I pay the extra $ now? But then I think, what if they’re not? Are unlock-able in-game items just as good as tangible items like figurines, plastic weapons, helmets, lunch-boxes and night vision goggles?
What about items that are “for a limited time only” where only a few were made, does that make you want it more? Does knowing you are one of only 100,000 to own it increase its value? Do you think that the night vision goggles in MW2 Prestige Edition won’t ever be made or sold again? Can those of us who have them rest assured with the knowledge that we will be the only ones to own these ever? Who knows?
I made sure I was first in line for Gears of War 2 so I could get that little remote control tank they were giving away for free if you bought the Limited Edition. They said they were only being offered for a limited time, they didn’t have that many, and it was first come first serve. Now you can buy those little tanks everywhere. Well, I take solace in the fact I didn’t have to pay for mine and right now that little tank is sitting in a cupboard with a lot of other crap I don’t play with. I only played with it once; it doesn’t really work on carpet. Oh well.
Have you ever ordered the amazing-exclusive-super-ultimate-mega-awesome-edition for a game and been disappointed with the stuff it came with? What about that collector’s edition that surprised you and exceeded your expectations in every way? Does it exist?
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction Exclusive Collector’s Edition:
* Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction game in unique Steel Book case
* An exclusive Sam Fisher statue
* Infiltration Mode: Eliminate all hostiles in the mission area without being detected
* A special playable skin: Shadow Armor
* Early access to 3 weapons: SC300, SR2 and MP5
* The official Splinter Cell Conviction Soundtrack (more than 17 tracks)
The SCC Collector’s Edition sounds awesome, any one pre-order this yet? I had a hard time finding this Collector’s Edition for sale but I did find it here for $119. But that site looks a little sketchy, which doesn’t leave me with the greatest confidence that this Collector’s Edition even exists. I hope it does, I want it.
What are some of the Collectors Editions you are looking forward to? We have a lot of games coming out this year. I am sure, at least one of them has a super-ultimate-badass-edition in the works. Start saving your money.
