Sam Fisher Infiltrates Hollywood!

I had the opportunity to attend the Splinter Cell Conviction Launch Party. It was held at the exclusive nightclub, Les Deux in Hollywood California. The event, hosted by Ubisoft, GameStop and Xbox started out early with a “first-to-play” co-op demo event for the general public. (Ten other ‘first-to-play” events took place the same day at different locations across the country.) This was the perfect time and place for Splinter Cell fans to get their Sam Fisher fix before the game hits store shelves on April 13, 2010.

We opened Lex Deux early to allow gamers to come in before the party and play. We had Xbox stations set up for people to play co-op on “Hunter” mode (the Deniable Ops missions we had just debuted at PAX East). Unlike Les Deux’s normal elitist policies, anyone was welcome to come in and play. We gave away Splinter Cell beanies and Xbox key chains. Psyche and I walked around asking players Splinter Cell questions and giving away cool Xbox schwag. It was a lot of fun. A few lucky players were put on the guest list and invited back to the party later that night, where they were treated to the star-studded main event.

THE RED CARPET

The red carpet started at 9pm and flash bulbs were going off like crazy as stars arrived to show their support for Sam Fisher. I stood out on the red carpet for a while watching people arrive, getting their pictures taken and being interviewed by the various news agencies covering the event. Most of the stars on the red carpet were asked about the game and gaming in general. I was impressed to find that a number of the celebrities that showed up actually play video games and were in fact Splinter Cell fans. I even witnessed a few of them back up that claim when given the chance to play the game inside.

THE PARTY

The club was decorated with Splinter Cell photos and Sam was everywhere. I had a great time walking around and helping people start their games and chatting about Splinter Cell. For me, one of the night’s greatest moments was sitting down to play with some of the games creators. The Producer of Splinter Cell Conviction, Alex Parizeau sat down with me and started to play. At first, I just wanted to watch him play. I eventually joined him and we played through a few areas on the Yastreb Complex map. It was awesome. Then the Creative Director for Splinter Cell: Conviction, Maxime Beland came and sat down and I got to play through the entire St Petersburg Banya map with him. I was on cloud 9 given the opportunity to play with these guys. We had some great games and played really well together. I loved watching their strategies as we moved through the different maps finding ways to take down targets that I hadn’t thought of before. I learned a lot.

In 2009 the highlight of my year was getting to play SCC on stage at the GameStop managers show in Las Vegas. I think the highlight of this year will forever be getting to play SCC with Maxime and Alex at the launch party. They couldn’t have chosen to play with a bigger fan of this game and of the series than me. I think, next to Sam Fisher, they were the biggest stars there.
