Geek Out Your Kids

Geek Kids

You’re never too young to embrace your inner geek. I must say that there is no better time to be a geeky kid than right now. I wish there would have been all this cool stuff when I was a kid. I just got to play with my imagination. While there is nothing wrong with that, I would have loved to have had costumes from my favorite science fiction movies or Donkey Kong decals on my walls. Instead I was running around with pantyhose on my head and building forts out of sofa cushions.

I certainly won’t make my son wear pantyhose on his head, but playing outside with nothing but his imagination and building forts out of sofa cushions is a rite of passage. However, I am looking forward to styling him out with all the coolest geekiest stuff. Today, there is so many great ways to geek out your kids and help them let their inner geek flag fly.

GEEKY BEDROOMS:
My Dad was awesome and let us spray paint and graffiti our bedroom walls when we were kids. As cool as that was, it was a lot of work to put it back to normal when I was an adult. While I might let my kid do something like that one day, here are some better (less permanent) ways to geek out your kid’s bedroom.

Pottery Barn Kids:
Batman Themed Bedroom
Star Wars Themed Bedroom
Spider Man Themed Bedroom

Wall Decals:
Nintendo Wall Graphics
Space Invaders Wall graphics
Atari Wall Graphics

Geeky Sheets: Anything that says “Geek Kids Bed Sheets” must be geeky...right?

GEEKY GADGETS:
Kids today are very tech savvy. There are all kinds of cool gadgets out there for them. Great hand held portable devices for playing video games, watching movies and listening to music.

3DS - great for plane rides or long road trips.

Hasbro’s MY3D – Watch 3D movies or play with 3D apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch. This just looked cool. I don’t know if it really works…anyone have one?

Lego MP3 player

iPod Touch - My 8yr old niece loves hers. She has all her favorite music on it as well as tons of movies and games.

Star Wars Light Saber Pens

Clock Radio for iPhone/iPod – This clock radio docking station illuminates and changes colors. I just got one for my niece for her birthday. It is really cool. It plays music from her iPod Touch as well as charges it and she also uses it as a nightlight.

GEEKY APPS FOR KIDS:
Some of you might cringe at handing over your iphone or ipad to a kid, but with the right apps you can turn your idevice into a learning tool to help make your kids smarter. Although there is no guarantee that if you give your kid an expensive piece of tech that they will get smarter…but, one can hope.

GEEKY STUFF:
I walked down an isle in Toys R Us the other day and was totally creeped out. Every toy on the shelf sensed my presence and started talking to me. I don’t know why it caught me so off guard; there are tons of high tech toys out there. Just about everything these days lights up, plays music, talks to you or moves on its own. Big deal, I’m only interested in the unique and unusual geeky items for my child. Plus, the best toys are 90% imagination and 10% toy.

Matryoshkus Nero Ensemble from the Art Lebedev Studio - make the right sequence and fit them together…Bit, byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte and terabyte.

NERD FLASHCARDS

SpyNet Night Vision Binoculars – I think every kid needs a pair of night vision goggles.

Periodic Table Building Blocks

Comic ‘Collector Glass Tumblers/Cups’

LED Pacifier – I’m not sure why you would need a pacifier to light up…but it would make it easier to find your baby in the dark.

Billy Bob Pacifires – Dan6er 6rey has the little vampire teeth pacifier. People are always asking me where to get it.

Keyboard Bib

MAD SCIENTIST Alphabet Blocks – I love these. I just ordered some for Dan6er 6rey.

GEEKY CLOTHES:
Since Geek is the new black, just about every clothing manufacturer has jumped on the Geek-is-Chic bandwagon and is pumping out “geek inspired” clothing for tots. Just know that you don’t want your kids looking like slaves to the trend. You must choose wisely. The best stuff is made by geeks for geeks.

Star Trek Costumes

Star Wars Costumes

ThinkGeek is a fantastic website. They offer tons of geeky treasures for the young and old. I personally love the little Super Hero and Star Trek onsies.

Jedi Robe – for the bigger kid looking to film himself in his garage practicing his light saber moves.

There is an overwhelming amount of 8 bit Attire on the CafePress website. They have a lot of geek inspired clothes for kids and infants. Most of it comes across looking cheap but there are some gems amongst the 8 bit overload.

J!nx Mini Geeks

GEEKY GAMES:
Video games aren’t the only way to indulge in a fantasy geek world. Board games offer just as much fun and an opportunity for the family to play together. I love geeky themed board games. Here are some of my favorites.

Monopoly comes in many geeky flavors. There are Nintendo themed, Star Trek themed, and GIJoe themed versions of the classic board game.

Dr. Who Save the Universe Board Game

Back To the Future the Card Game

GENIUS DECKS

Halo Risk

GEEKY BOOKS:
I picked up some great books today. I bought them under the guise that I was getting them for my son…but who am I kidding. These are for me (as most of this stuff is).

Millennium Falcon: A3-D Owner’s Guide

Kids Star Wars ABC Book

Comic Books - If you are going to let your kids read and collect comic books make sure you know what they are reading and that it is age appropriate or read with them so you are able to answer questions and explain the more adult themes.

World of Geekcraft Projects

One day my child will be sitting in class and the teacher will ask him “A is for…?” and I hope he will reply ”Ackbar”. That’s when I will know that I have done my job well.
