CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has been one of my favorite TV shows since I first started watching it in 2002. I remember it being 2002 because I met this hot guy at a bar who was working on this crime scene show I had never heard of. He was too cute for me not to check out his show. Turns out, he plays Nick Stokes on one of the best shows CBS has to offer. After that, I was hooked. Not on the hot guy, but the show.
A few years later, I got a call asking if I wanted to come “day play” as a production assistant on CSI. Being that it was now my favorite show on television, I jumped at the opportunity. Up until that point I had only worked on Movies. On a movie, unless it’s a sequel, you don’t really know what you’re working on until it is released in theaters a year later. You have no idea if it will be good or bad, because you only see one piece of the puzzle at a time. The actors are just actors, they won’t become characters you know and love for at least another year. So to step on the set of a pre-existing show, one that I watch religiously was a new experience for me. To me, the set’s are real, I see them on TV all the time. The actors don’t have real names they are only known to me as Gil Grissom and Katherine Willows. There I was…standing in these crime scenes, next to these famous CSI’s and witnessing the creative process that goes into one of my favorite shows. It was very cool. And whenever CSI called me for work, I was available and willing to do whatever they needed.
For seasons 9 and 10 I have worked on the show as a body double. It’s one of the best jobs ever. As a body double or hand double I get to work with the small “insert” unit mostly on a sound stage at Universal Studios. It is a smaller unit that is not as hectic as the main shooting crew and we are always on stage so there are no elements to brave except the air conditioner that keeps the stages really really cold.
The insert unit spends all day shooting inserts of hands, feet, objects, close-up shots of whatever they didn’t do on the main unit due to budget or time constraints. We recreate the scene on a smaller scale. My hands (and other parts of my body) are used as a substitute for all the female actresses on the show. I put on their costumes, sometimes rubber gloves and mimic their actions and they shoot close up shots of my hands interacting with evidence or whatever the scene calls for.
When you watch the show you might notice (if you can pause it) that all the women on the show have the same lovely hands…mine. Like I said, it’s the best job ever.
You don’t have to go get a job in Hollywood to step into your favorite show, you can do it right at home. Ubisoft has just announced new CSI games coming out this October. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Fatal Conspiracy for PC, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 (and for the first time ever on PS3) and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Unsolved! for the Nintendo DS. These games are a must play for CSI fans. Here are the details:

I love the show and I love the games. I had a great time playing through the last CSI game (CSI: Deadly Intent) and I can’t wait for the new ones.
It’s funny how life works sometimes. I’ve worked on the set of CSI off and on for years. Now I am helping launch the new games in the CSI video game series and I get to share with everyone my love for all things CSI. If you love CSI too, follow me on twitter and fan the CSI facebook page. I will be bringing you updates about the games, contests, and exclusive sneak peaks from set. I am your CSI insider.
