80’s SciFi Lizards Rule

Most of my favorite TV shows as a kid are still my favorite today. I grew up on TV series like Wonder Woman, Buck Rogers, A-Team, and “V”. I never get tired of these shows, even though some of them are awful by today’s standards. I don’t care, I still enjoy them.

I was flipping through Netflix the other day and came across the complete “V” series. Since then, I have been watching every episode over and over, back to back, for weeks now. I just leave it on all day and I wish there were more to watch. I love this show. It’s 80’s Science Fiction Cheese at its best.

For those of you who are not familiar with this TV series, I will give you a brief rundown.

Aliens visitors come to earth. The Visitors look identical to us but they are really Lizards wearing human masks. They sound funny and wear blue blocker sunglasses outside. At first they offer peace and the cure for cancer, but really they want to rule earth. They eat rats, mice, birds and the occasional person. Diana is the lizard in charge who is sexy, powerful and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Her second in command is Lydia who looks like David Bowie in drag and hates Diana. Their rivalry is only out done by their dueling make-up and hairstyles.

Some people on earth aren’t “digging” the Visitors so they form the resistance. Members of the resistance include Donovan (The Beastmaster), Ham (Sam Fisher) and Willie (Freddy Krueger) a vegan lizard who fights for the resistance.

A lady gives birth to a lizard baby Star Child, half lizard half human with special powers. The Star Child has accelerated growth and then becomes the same age as her mom. They fall in love with the same guy. Drama Drama. The Lizards want to capture the Star Child and then there is lots of running, fighting, lasers, flying mother ships, red jump suits, member’s only jackets, and explosions. Everyone in the resistance gets captured a lot. Then there are lots of conversion chamber torture scenes, more escaping, running, chasing, star cruisers and hiding.

Eventually the resistance makes red dust that kills the Lizards when they inhale it. The Visitors have to leave earth. Unfortunately, the dust doesn’t last forever, so… they come back to earth and it all starts over again.

I had not seen this show since I was a kid, when we use to watch it as a family at its release in 1984. My love for Science Fiction is greatly due to my Father’s love for Science Fiction. I think my dad is pretty cool, so I tend to like what he likes.

It has been 27 years since “V” first aired. Seeing it again was like seeing an old friend that I thought was lost to me. It was strange watching a show as an adult that I had not seen since I was a child as my perspective has changed a great deal. I am older and have a greater understanding of the character dynamics. The special effects compared to today’s standards, make this series look like a bad student film, but I remember them looking very real. I have also worked on a number of Movies and TV shows around Los Angeles and now recognize locations used in the show. You would think that my new adult perspective would ruin the shows appeal for me, but it does just the opposite- it makes me love it even more.

And because I hadn’t seen it in so long, a lot of it seems new to me.  For instance, I never noticed the show’s excessive use of sparkle glitter hairspray that I am now on a mission to get. Or how hot and sexy Diana was, she has a million super-awesome 80’s wardrobe changes, and her make-up is inspiring. I want to be her. I do believe Diana will be my next Cosplay and I am going to make myself a Visitor outfit one of these days.

When I was a kid I was all for the resistance, but watching it as an adult, I am now pro Lizard. I wish they made shows like this now a days. I know they have made a new “V” series, but I’ve never seen it. My Dad says its pretty good and I’m sure it is. I’ll get around to checking it out one of these days. Until then, I’ll stick with rubber lizard masks, a vegetarian Freddy Kruger and little animatronics lizard babies, because 80’s SciFi Lizards rule!
