Observation of the Week
Feb 14, 2:00 pm

We all talk about how people stereotype women gamers. “Oh, women can’t play games” or “You’re cute, there’s no way you could be good at games.” Well, when I thought about it, the fact is that I find myself stereotyping guys as well! Like many others, I am currently obsessed with Rock Band. I play whenever and wherever it is available. Right now, I only have full access to it on weekends as well as sometimes at work. I’ve realized that Rock Band is an ultimate attraction - there’s something for everyone and even if you can’t sing and aren’t the slightest bit coordinated, you can still find something that’s your level. I purchased Rock Band about 4 weeks ago, and for the last month I’ve been having tons of get-togethers just for that occasion. It’s a perfect invitation. “Wanna come over? I have Rock Band....” How can anyone resist? I’ve been playing with friends, strangers, friends of friends - you name it. When you say “Rock Band”, people will come.

And now that I’ve played with so many different kinds of people (mostly guys, I have to say), I’m finding myself stereotyping them. They’ll come over, and for some reason I’ll assume that they must be great at Rock Band. They must have played Guitar Hero before or maybe I assume they’ve dabbled in drums in real life. But many times, I’m discovering that they’re just not that good! I mean, usually you can tell when someone has a lot of potential and they learn fast. But sometimes there are those who are just not that coordinated and well, not that good. There’s nothing wrong with that though, because when it comes down to it, we’re all in the same band and we have to work together. I just find myself surprised when I encounter this kind of situation. I mean, what made me think that just because he was a guy, he would be awesome at this sort of game? I guess on the flip side, this is how guys think when they see people like the Frag Dolls. This isn’t a sort of blog to put the male species down or anything, but I guess to me it was just interesting to be on the other side for once.
