Geekiness Revisited
May 21, 5:20 am

I know it’s been a while since my last blog, but I’ve found a new obsession. This isn’t necessarily a new obsession, but more like a rekindled hobby. Ever since I got back from NY Comic Con, I’ve been on a comic book high. I started talking with a few coworkers about the latest comics and realized that I have no idea what’s going on in the comic world! I felt ashamed to even call myself a comic book fan! I had been collecting comics for about 15 years now, but as most of you know, I was a follower of comic book art, not comic book story lines. The history of the Green Lantern? Not a clue. How many universes are there in the DC universe? No idea. Who’s Joss Whedon? I would have to shake my head in shame.

But one day, someone brought me an interesting read. “Superman: Red Son,” he said. “Try it out.” So I did. And it suddenly sparked my interest again. I had no idea that comic book writing had evolved so much. I wanted more. In the next few weeks, I read trade after trade - The OMAC Project, Identity Crisis, Runaways (vol 1), Day of Vengeance, the new Seven Soldiers of Victory, Powers, and even the long and somewhat painful Crisis on Infinite Earths. I even opened my stash of comics and was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of trades right in my own backyard! Strangers in Paradise, Gen 13, Battle Chasers, Batman: Hush, and various X-Men titles. I couldn’t wait to get into these.

And now, I’m totally obsessed! I want to read as much as possible, whenever possible. Laughter, pain, joy, heartfelt emotions… I never knew comics could make me feel this way! And on top of that, new styles of art that I’ve never seen before. Comics aren’t just about superheroes anymore, that’s for sure. So if anyone has any good recommended reading, I’m all ears!
