An American Frag Doll in Europe - Part 2
Oct 15, 8:56 am

It’s hard to believe that less than a week ago I was halfway around the world. It was a little weird and sad coming back from Europe, but I think I’m back to my somewhat normal life. And even though it was my second time backpacking through there, it was just amazing, maybe even more now that I’m older this time. I really miss the cappuccinos, gorgeous sites, and public transportation. What I don’t miss are the smoke infested areas, the high prices, and tourist traps - especially constantly fearing the pick pocketers. Anyhow, it’s nice to be back. So without further ado, on with the pictures!

Spain

Sangria - this quickly became a staple of our diet once we hit Spain. We moved on to red wine once we hit Italy.

null
The Sagrada Familia by Gaudi, Barcelona - only 100 years in the making!

null
Some gorgeous reflections from the stain glass windows from inside the Sagrada Familia. Let me remind you that this building is a church.

null
Some days felt like all we did was sit on a train. The seats are surprisingly comfortable! Much better than airplane seats.

Italy

null
Gelato - I strongly recommend 2-4 servings per day.

null
A view from part of the hike through Cinque Terre (5 cities along the Italian Riviera). See that little town in the far back? That’s where we started.

null
Our hike was about 6 hours. We made it to the last city just as the sun was going down - perfect timing.

On a random bridge in Venice. I think at this point, we had been lost and wandering around the streets and alleys for at least 2 hours.

null
We were so pooped that most nights were spent either a) watching episodes of Arrested Development on my friend’s laptop b) playing cards or c) playing our DS’. Gotta love multiplayer DS games (Meteos, New Super Mario Bros, Bust-a-move, Big Brain Academy, Tetris DS, Mario Kart). Bringing my DS could not have been a better decision.

null
Inside the Roman Colosseum aka the Flavian Amphitheater.

null
Enjoying the view at Palatine Hill (near the Roman Forums)

null
The dress code is pretty strict at the Vatican. The sign is supposed to be informing you of the “no sleeveless shirts and shorts” rule, but to me it says “no bathing suits from the 1920s”.

Greece

null
On the steps of the Dionysious theater at the Acropolis in Athens.

null
It was quite a hike up to the Parthenon, but the view of Athens was totally worth it.

null
In front of the Parthenon - the clouds were so surreal that day

null
Santorini - known for the Caldera (which includes this big volcanic mass) and some of most beautiful sunsets in the world

null
The black sand beaches of Santorini.

null
After visiting beaches in Nice, Cinque Terre, and Greece, I’ve concluded that nothing beats the soft sandy beaches of California. The European version of “sand” is more like small pebbles and litterbox-like sand. Ouch.

null
And last but not least, you really can’t go to Europe and not try all the snacks, chocolate, and candy. Here’s a hazelnut cream hippo - with sprinkles of course.

Hope you enjoyed the show. No more vacation photos, I promise.
