This past weekend, I recently had the privilege of watching Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. For someone who was blown away by the cut scenes in FFVII, watching this movie only enhanced that feeling by 10-fold. This is the movie I was hoping Square would release - something based on the games, something bringing all your favorite heroes, villains, and summons to life. While watching all the action sequences in the movie, I couldn’t help but wonder how many hit points that kick from Tifa was taking off. I guess that’s how it is when you see one of your favorite games on the big screen.
FFVII was my first RPG. I loved all the characters and their stories, but most of all, I loved the gorgeous graphics. I actually still have this 2 page spread FFVII advertisement tacked to my wall - that was from 8 years ago. It’s a scenery shot of Midgar and the quote says “Like a deer in headlights”. Exactly. And how cool is Cloud? We always get asked who the hottest gaming dudes are and I think Cloud would have to be one of them. I dig that spiky hair.
I’m trying really hard not to give anything away, but if anything, just watch the trailer if you haven’t already. The story is really just a slight continuation of the game. But to be honest, I’ll admit I was a bit lost with the whole movie plot. Ok, so maybe it had something to do with me taking 2 years to complete the game, therefore not really remembering every detail of the game plot.
Before you gasp in horror, let me explain. I didn’t own a PlayStation. In fact, I was still stuck on the SNES at the time, but good thing for fellow gamer friends. I ended up borrowing a PlayStation here and there, bought my own memory card and game, and was an orphan FFVII gamer with no real console home. Hence taking 2 years to see that ending! But for those of you who still remember every aspect of the game, you’ll probably really appreciate the story to the movie. Watch for those little easter eggs here and there too. It really is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.
