After reading a ton of terrible articles and viewing ridiculous documentaries on how video games cause large disasters and world violence, I decided to focus on the good things that come from video games. Even though I have been MIA from the online gaming world, I have still kept studying about video games and their effects on human behavior.
There have been some studies that show that video games may cause aggression, but it is usually on young kids who are playing mature rated games. As for the aggression, it’s temporary. On the other hand, there have also been studies that show no increase in aggression in kids who play video games. But which one is true? Well when it comes to studying something like this, the experiment has to be longitudinal, meaning that it has to be conducted for a long period of time. It should also have several different subject pools. Doing a study like this will require a lot of time and money. Most of the studies out there have been done rather quickly and I can’t say that I trust them. The fact of the matter is, when dealing with psychology statistics it is so easy to change your findings from finding no significance in something to finding a great deal of significance. All it takes is a change in a formula and it could alter the whole result.
Soon I will be conducting my own study on video games for my thesis. It’s mainly focused on the positive aspects, such as learning. I don’t want to go into too much into detail about it yet since I have to have it reviewed by the psychology board to make sure its ethical, which means I had to take shock treatment out (haha just kidding). But I can’t wait to let you guys know more about it.
Anyway back to studies. They are very sensitive and there is always a chance of error. This means anything can go wrong and mess up the study. Hopefully an unbiased study that is legit will be put out there to show the truth, which I believe is that violence is not caused directly by video games. There are games out there that children should not be playing and it’s up to their parents to be educated enough to prevent their kids from touching games like Manhunt or GTA. Obviously, if video games caused violence we would have an epidemic of killers all over the world. Answer me this, why aren’t all gamers going nuts and causing havoc all over the world?
Game On strong!
