With the launch of 1 vs 100 beta on the Xbox 360, I have a feeling a whole new trend is in the making! Most everyone loves game shows from Jeopardy, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Wheel of Fortune, Deal or No Deal and so on. Yet the only draw back is that you have to physically be there to participate if selected. Not anymore! 1 vs 100 has changed all that! Now anyone can be a contestant from the comfort of their home. How cool is that?!
Right now “Xbox LIVE is offering a beta version of its new game show 1 vs 100 in the United States and Canada. The different versions of 1 vs 100 are 1 vs 100 Live and 1 vs 100 Extended Play. 1 vs 100 Live is a two-hour game with a live host in which players may be selected for high-profile roles like the Mob and The One. 1 vs 100 Extended Play is a fast-paced, half-hour show—the more you play, the better your chances of being picked as the Mob or The One in 1 vs 100 Live!”(Xbox.com) Pretty simple and very addicting.
Basically it is the exact replica of the TV show 1 vs 100 except with avatars instead of real people. In my opinion what makes this show stand out from any other trivia video game is that it is LIVE and hosted by Chris Cashman. He provides “color commentary and game updates, goes over the game rules, announces the current game status, reveals number of Mob members remaining after a question, and informs players of upcoming promotional events.”(Xbox.com) My favorite part is when he gives personal call outs to players who win, perform well, or makes jokes about player’s avatars making the experience that much more enjoyable. I was playing a 1 vs 100 Live match the other day and he had me cracking up because he was poking fun at the One’s monocle. The live commentary that Chris brings to the table is the key to 1 vs 100. He is what makes you feel like you’re participating in a real Game Show.
1 v s 100 has been very successful since the beta launch and I believe this is the start of a new trend. I think in the future we will be seeing more TV game shows coming to consoles LIVE. The virtual world of Live game shows is at our doorstep and I feel it will be welcomed with warm arms. Who knows you may be a contestant of the Price is Right soon from the comfort of your own home. Maybe Project Natal will bring a whole new level of virtual reality to the game show genre.
