I know the popular opinion on gamers is that we hate to exercise, among other things. However, I beg to differ with this particular generalization. I don’t think anyone (unless you are really sick) LOVES to workout. I’m not saying that there isn’t a certain release when you get done and are totally drained or are really mad at something and you just run it all out, but your average day to day workout can be somewhat uninspiring.
I have recently been doing my daily 4-mile jog in my gym’s theater room. Usually, they play movies that were popular 5-10 years ago, selections like Charlie’s Angels, Clueless and Hackers. The other night I was pleasantly surprised when Lord of the Rings, The two Towers was shown.
Now usually, I hit my 3rd mile and I’m just dying to get to the 4th so I can be done! I don’t know if it’s because I’ve seen LOTR about a million times so I know what’s going on without hearing the words (I listen to my iPod when I run), or if it’s just the fact that Frodo and friends are so much damn fun to watch!! Or maybe it’s because the movie is so long that the 40 minutes it takes me to get through 4 miles is just a glimpse, or perhaps it could be that there’s so much non-stop action. Whatever it is, I caught myself going past my goal mark because I was too engrossed in the movie to notice the time. I am now curious if this is true only to me or would other self professed “nerds” also notice the time fly if Star Wars or even Star Trek movies were there to distract them. Maybe one day instead of “Gold’s Gym” there will be a “ Darth’s Gym”… Yoda Yoga!
