Movie games?!
Oct 20, 10:00 am

So I was thinking the other day, with Avatar coming out and the growing movie/game collaboration there must be an infinite amount of possibilities for great movies. Games for so long have revolved around great storylines, character development and simplistic visuals to engross us. Not until the last few years has the gaming industry been able to utilize truly stunning cinematics to bring your favorite games to life. I have been amazed how far the industry has come in making some games feel like truly watching a movie.

With popular movies like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Resident Evil, Wolverine, James Bond 007 Goldeneye, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Tomb Raider, House of the Dead, Doom, Hitman, Max Payne and so many more all having their game counterparts where can we go from here? I know that the popular consensus is for movies like Halo and Gears of War but really what popular game wouldn’t make a good movie? Being a huge fantasy/sci-fi fan myself, I have always loved movies like Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Equilibrium, and so many others in the genre I can’t wait to see where this all leads us. I am really hoping for an Assassin’s Creed movie most of all.

According to Wiki, some of the movies in production right now or that are apparently TBA are:

•American McGee’s Alice • Area 51 • BioShock • Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars •Castlevania
•Citizen Siege • City of Heroes • Dante’s Inferno • Deus Ex • Devil May Cry • Doom 2 • Driver • Duke Nukem
• Earthworm Jim • EverQuest • Fear Effect • God of War • Halo •Hitman 2 • Hunter: The Reckoning • Infamous
• Just Cause • Kane & Lynch • Lost Planet • Mass Effect • MechWarrior • Medievil • Metal Gear Solid • Metroid
• Need For Speed • The Neverhood • Nightmare Creatures • Onimusha • Pac-Man • Return to Castle Wolfenstein
• Shadow of the Colossus • Silent Hill 2 • Soul Calibur • Spy Hunter • The Sims • The Suffering • Tomb Raider 3
• Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell • Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune • The Unforgettable • World of Warcraft

That is truly an epic list of games there! If only half of these movies do eventually get made we are looking at possibly some of our favorite movies ever to be made coming right from our PC’s and consoles.

Here is a short list of movies and games that are upcoming releases for our viewing pleasure:

• Tekken (2009) • The Legend of Spyro 3D (2009) • Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (2009)
• Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (May 28, 2010) • The King of Fighters (2010)
• BloodRayne III: Warhammer (2010) • Clock Tower (2010) • Mortal Kombat: Devastation (2010)
• Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) • Dead Space (2011) • Gears of War (2011)

I really feel this is a testament to where the gaming industry has come from and where it is going. From originally being thought of for kids, gaming has evolved into a lifestyle, culture and major major influence on the world we live in today. From the early days of Pong by Atari to being one of the largest influences of the film industry I guess the game industry isn’t doing half bad!
