Are you tired of slow internet connections? Does your local internet service only supply you with so much speed but it just doesn’t seem like enough? Well the Federal Government hears you and the FCC is looking to fix that! On March 15th the FCC released some details of their “Broadband Plan” to increase speeds across the country.
“The commission plans to use educational programs and an expansion of broadband Internet infrastructure to give 90 percent of Americans high-speed Internet access at home by 2020.”
Currently, only 65 percent of Americans have high-speed Internet access at home, which the FCC says is a detriment to economic growth. The proposal will make the U.S. ”the world’s largest market of high-speed broadband users” and will create jobs, the FCC says in a news release.”

The main goal of this plan is to give 100 million households speeds of 100mbps+ by the year 2020. Currently the US is averaging speeds of only 3.9mbps and anyone with Time Warner Cable knows they cap their Upload speeds at .5mbps.
“Each community in America also will get access to at least one “ultra-high-speed” connection at a library, school or military base. Those connections will reach speeds of 1 gigabit per second, the FCC said in the news release.
The country’s broadband plan was required as part of President Obama’s 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which allocated $7.2 billion to broadband-related initiatives.”

With speeds like that online gaming could reach heights that it has never dreamed of. One of the things we all have had issues with is lag but can u imagine possibilities of 1gbps? That is unheard of speeds. That will make internet connections almost instantaneous and grumblings about host advantage a thing of the past. If the FCC succeeds in completing this gargantuous task of completely revamping the United States internet infrastructure by 2020 we will be some very, very happy gamers.
The entire plan is being released on March 16th in an internal FCC meeting and I am sure we will have more info about what we can expect and when we can expect it. One of the other goals of this plan is to reduce broadband costs to the consumer. I say the sooner the better and I can’t wait to reap the benefits.
For now the benefits of an ultra-fast infrastructure is coming to pass at Comcast with the release of DOCSIS 3.0. Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications version 3.0 has been widely released across the country by Comcast and is already providing speeds of up to 100mbps! So if you are in a Comcast DOCSIS 3.0 market, get you a Motorola SB6120 and enjoy your newly found speeds!
