Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee”
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson
After many years of being an avid Big Game Fisher-woman, I decided to up the ante a bit and try for a real trophy catch. I’ve spent years landing some of the biggest and most deadly creatures of the sea that are known to man. Jaws; been there done that- I mean, seriously, who’s afraid of catching Nemo with some teeth? Moby Dick was a bit of a challenge, but call me Ishmael , when I actually carved the blubber from that sperm whale. It’s now time to set my harpoon for the Kraken!
When going for a beast of the magnitude of the Kraken, I really needed to identify what equipment to bring along with my strategy. I have to look at all my tackle and figure out the best combo needed for this task, which test line to use for a 4 million pound animal, and I will definitely need a pretty heavy-duty rod as well. Then, there is which bait to use- I mean I can’t just put a horse on the other end of my line and hope for the best, right? I also need to look at the size of boat I will be using to bring this bad boy in as any old dinghy won’t do. A battle like this could last longer then my 24 hour marathon of Black Ops, so I definitely need to be well prepared with chips, guacamole, and plenty of energy drinks.
Berkley Trilene Big Game 650 Yds. Green - Big Game features an abrasion resistant formula that runs through rod guides with less friction, yet has the shock absorption and fighting power to handle big fish in fresh and saltwater.
Berkley Trilene XL - 110 Yd. Pony Spool Clear - America’s most trusted line means trouble-free fishing. * Smoother casting with even greater strength and durability. *Less twisting, fewer kinks, and fewer backlashes. * Incredible handling combined with exceptional strength.
Lifting Chain- When all else fails, this will certainly do the trick! - Calibrated grade 50 lifting chain is made in the USA to grade 80 dimensions. Never exceed working load limit (WILL). Working load limits are based on gradual pull and not shock loads. Make sure that all components in the assembly be overhead lifting rated and have the same working load limits.
PENN IGFA International V Rod With its impressive diamond wrap, the International V IGFA Rods feature the highest quality components, like full AFTCO guides and detachable machined aluminum butts and gimbals. Models 5080B and 5130B feature the Bent Butt, which lowers the reel for greater angler comfort, lengthening the fulcrum lever to your advantage.
Standard on all of the International Rods is the progressive taper of Penn’s P450 glass tubular blanks. Penn IGFA Rods feature a parabolic taper, ideal for fighting fish from the chair, applying maximum pressure to the fish with a mechanical advantage in favor of the angler. While these rods are noticed at the dock for their visual appeal, you’ll favor these rods on the water for their fish-fighting capabilities.
Lamiglas Big Fish Rods - These rods really clean up. (And that is where the similarities to broomsticks end.) Dominate over-sized sturgeon to 800 pounds. Hoist 300-pound groupers from barnacle-encrusted wrecks. Haul in tuna, large sharks, billfish and barn door- sized...heck, you could haul in aircraft-hangar-door-sized halibut with these beauties.
Last year the charter boats, lodges and professional guides got hold of them and we’ve been shipping them out by the barge load ever since. With our Big Fish Series, you’ll have the spectrum covered from halibut to tuna and from small live bait to large dead fish for bait and all the lures in between. All rods feature black, blue and silver diamond wraps and under-wraps over matte black blanks.
Little Tikes Fishing Rod. - After hours and hours of research and listening to some of the other professionals advice I decided on what I will be using. For the fishing rod I decided to go with the MGA Little Tikes Fishing Rod, because the rod has an all-in-one bobber, hook with release button and it also has a safety containment hook area, which is perfect for catching the Kraken. Plus the fishing pole came with 3 plastic fish which is awesome.
Bonito - I’m not totally sure the best place to catch Bonito as I’ve never caught one. I know tons of this fish are caught offshore I’m just not sure if they can be had from the beaches. I have seen these guys in the freezer at bait shops. Consider yourself lucky if you can use the bonito as bait.
Whiting - Whiting primarily feast upon shrimp or sand fleas. The bull whiting are pretty fun to catch, but anything smaller can be tough to determine if you’ve even got a bite especially with the waves. These guys should be your last choice for bait. Something is always better than nothing.
Live Bait- A favorite of many anglers, who believe they can catch more fish with live bait, because it’s a natural food source. The favorite live fishing bait of all times is worms, with night crawlers and red worms at the top of the list. Shad is the most popular bait fish, with minnows and beam also popular.
Big fish eat little fish, so they work well and live cut-bait is also used.Crawfish or cray fish are used for bass. Crickets and grasshoppers are also used as live fishing bait. With live bait as an option, going to the club and having that creepy drunk guy that bugs you for your number could be a good idea for bait, but committing a crime isn’t probably a good idea- it’s a thought though!
For my final decision on the bait, I decided to use the free 3 plastic fishes that came with the rod because free plastic fish are the best kinds of plastic fish. Plus I’m flat out broke after spending $500 dollars on Amp energy drinks and all those tortilla chips.
When going over boat sizes, I realized that a $60,000 boat wasn’t really in my budget this week so I went with a minor down grade and went to Walmart and bought a Heritage Floating Boat House and Yacht. Because after I get put in the Guinness Book of World Records I need a sweet looking boat house to dock my Yacht.
So there I was all packed up ready to hit the mighty waters and begin this task of catching a true giant of the ocean. Sadly I then realized I was in Kansas and my dreams were shot to Hades… The good news is I still have my sweet Yacht and boat house and all the Amp i could drink for the next 20 years. So if your up to the task I’ve given you a foolproof layout for you to catch a Kraken. Game on Gamers because I’m gonna go play some Go Fish.
