FPS Real World Style
Sep 15, 10:00 am

Another day and another adventure, plus more welts than I care to endure but it’s so worth it! Paintballing is pretty much the safest way I can play FPS in real life, at least without causing any “permanent” damage to anyone. Being the huge FPS fan that I am, it only seemed like an easy and natural transition from the console to the real world sport.

I found myself waking up early on a Sunday morning feeling like I am getting ready to go into battle.  Getting out my Under Armour, my Army fatigues, and driving out to a field that appears like WWIII has taken place, paintball style. As we pull up, there are two separate fields for two very different styles of play.

Directly to the left and close to the entrance is a speedball field. Named speedball for the high intensity and high volume game play which is featured on ESPN and other networks when the pro season playoffs come around. The field consists of a large, rectangular, net enclosed area with astro turf and multiple shaped and sized blow up obstacles. The game is always run and gun and lots of paint flying everywhere. The excitement usually draws a crowd.

The second field is a woodsball field that is played almost the exact opposite as speedball. Woodsball is a very expansive play type with preset boundaries in a wooded area and obstacles or barriers scattered throughout. Woodsball can be played by any rules and is a lot more similar to FPS than speedball is. Some examples of game types which are played at the field I got to, Boss Paintball, are CTF, Attack on Georgetown and Fox and the Hound.

By the end of the day, after many hours of play, I am always as tired as can be, covered in welts and ready for a nap but I always come back for more. If you are a FPS fan and want to try it out in the real world, I highly recommend paintball as the best option. It also is an amazing stress reliever!
