Since EVERYONE seems to be in agreement about these unspoken rules we must follow while playing First Person Shooters, I felt it necessary to compile the list for reference.
Implied rules of First Person Shooters
By Wh1n3 E. CrYb4bY
- No Spawn Camping.
Apparently, there are areas of the map you are allowed to travel to and other areas that are forbidden. You will be able to score a metric buttload of kills and most likely win the game for your team if you travel to the forbidden area (A.K.A. the other team’s spawn). Obviously, you don’t want to get too many kills, or else they’ll declare “spawn camper” to guilt you into letting them win. Who cares if you had to skillfully kill all of their team multiple times and tactically advance your position to be able to get into their spawn; you’re being cheap by using things to your advantage. - No Rocket Whoring.
Once you have killed three people with the rocket launcher it is polite to put it down and use a different weapon. Sure, the point is to get as many kills as possible, but you have to consider the feelings of the players on the other team. They’re probably getting really angry because you’re winning… that’s just not fair! - No Glitching (i.e. Halo – auto-reload, BXB, BXR, over jumping).
Whether or not the game designer meant to have that glitch in the game, you are not allowed to take advantage of it. Not everyone is smart and clever (not to mention good looking) enough to know about and use glitches. By not using them it will promote equality. - No Using the “Noob Combo”.
(Definition: Noob, meaning inexperience player, or newbie; Combo referring to the use of the Plasma Pistol and Battle Rifle in Halo 2) Using the Noob Combo is a no-no in the gaming world. Yes, the professionals use it as much as possible in tournaments because it’s a quick and effective way to bring down an enemy, but you’re better than that, right? We’ve found that if we associate the use of this combo with a term that means inexperienced player we’ll make people who use it feel bad about themselves, and even if they do win, we can justly accuse them of having no skill. A perfect lose-win situation!
Now that my sarcasm pills have worn off, it is absolutely necessary for competitive players to know the glitches, spawn points, psych-out strategies, power weapons and weapon and power-up respawn times. Psyche has her psych-out strategies down to a science (“Psych! Psych! Psych! Psych! Psych! Psych!") and she puts the “spawn camping” myth into an understandable truth, “It’s not spawn camping, it’s spawn containment.” Well put, Psyche.
On a completely different thought: I really like the size of my puppy right now. So I was thinking, you know how when you keep a plant potted it won’t grow bigger than the size of its pot will allow? Well, what if I kept my puppy in his puppy-size collar? I wonder if he’ll stay puppy size.
