Cadette Preparedness

It goes by many names, the PAX plague, Con-Sars, PAX-flu and my personal favorite… H1Nerd1. Regardless of what clever name people will conjure up for it this year, that pesky “convention cold” will undoubtedly make an appearance this PAX EAST. With thousands of sweaty people crammed into one convention hall for three days, it’s no surprise that people get sick from all the close contact. Whether it’s just a cold, the sniffles or even the full-blown flu, chances are you will encounter someone who is afflicted during your PAX journeys.

I am no stranger to the PAX illness. I wanted to make certain this year I would make it there and back without acquiring the slightest cough and without getting everyone else sick again. I started to feel under the weather last week so I made sure to up my vitamin intake and get extra sleep so I would win the battle against whatever was thrown at me.  Seemed to work, I feel great and I am ready for Boston!

Whether this is your first event or if you’re a seasoned Cadette, here are some of my tips to avoid the threat, and make sure that if you do get ill you do not spread the sickness.

Wash your hands as much as possible.

· This one should go without saying, but with all the controller sharing for demos, hugging friends, touching door knobs, elevator buttons and shaking hands of people you meet these colds get passed around so quickly. Washing your hands often will keep you and our community safe.

Get a good night’s sleep.

· Although it’s tempting to want to stay out all hours of the night enjoying the fun times of these events, I can assure you it’s worth it to get to sleep at a somewhat decent hour. It will help your immunity and you will have the energy to make it through the long days. Every extra hour of sleep will make you feel that much more energetic.

Keep Hand Sanitizer/Wipes available.

· I have found it very helpful to carry some kind of hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes around with me to either wipe off a controller or to clean my hands.  If nothing else, having that peace of mind after using Purell always keeps my worries at bay.

Sharing food and drinks are a bad idea!

· Even if you don’t feel sick, you still might be.  Drinking out of someone’s glass or eating off of someone’s plate is risky in these situations. Anyone could potentially have a cold, and sharing germs might be bad news for the entire group.  I recommend staying away from sharing anything with anyone.  From my previous personal experience I have found that failure to adhere to this particular rule might end up with the entire community contracting swine flu.... again.

Here’s hoping that everyone has a fun and healthy weekend! See you all at PAX!
