“An Evening with Leonard Nimoy”

I love Spock! But honestly, who doesn’t? The logical, pointy-eared alien has made a huge impression on the Sci-Fi world, and I am but one of many fans. So when I heard that Leonard Nimoy was making a guest appearance in Washington DC, I jumped at the chance to go. How often are we able to meet such a talented and prolific actor? I wanted to hear all about his experiences on the set of Star Trek, and even more about his experiences with fame and fans. And since my favorite character from the original Star Trek series is Spock, I knew that this was one event I wouldn’t be able to miss!
The recently-turned-80 year old living legend was everything I had expected him to be, and more! His deep voice was relaxing as he began describing his childhood memories and early acting career. He explained in detail how he auditioned for the role of Spock in the Star Trek series, and how he had to deal with the unexpected onslaught of fans and fame that accompanied the role.
His most interesting story related to the creation of the famous Vulcan hand symbol – a suggestion from Mr. Nimoy himself! He recalled the filming of the Episode “Amok Time,” where the character Spock is required to return to his home world, Vulcan, to marry. Mr. Nimoy, now totally in-sync with Spock, thought that this would be a great opportunity to shed some light into Vulcan culture, and suggested to the director that they should add something to the script to show a Vulcan custom. The director agreed, and put Mr. Nimoy in charge of creating the custom before filming the episode (talk about pressure!).
Mr. Nimoy thought long and hard about what the character Spock could do or say as a Vulcan ritual, and remembered a time when he was 8 years old attending a worship service at a Synagogue in Massachusetts. There, he saw a unique hand sign relating to the Jewish worship service, and he immediately brought the idea of using this hand sign to the director. The director loved the idea, and immediately asked Mr. Nimoy to teach the cast how to do it.

At the time, Mr. Nimoy didn’t realize the implications of this new Vulcan hand sign - soon enough, the cast, crew, and fans everywhere were flashing this symbol in customary greeting, and before long the hand sign would become synonymous with Spock’s character.
