“I Wanna Rock!”

Eventides is getting her Ph.D.—but she’s not that kind of doctor. She’s studying gender and music gaming! In this video, she tells us more about her research and shows us what she looks for when rocking out in person or on a virtual stage. She then asks a musician to give his thoughts on music gaming, especially in light of Rocksmith coming out!

WRITTEN CONTENT SUBMISSION:
“Breaking News! April O’Neil Cosplay”

NYNYI’ll start by saying that I am an absolute novice at cosplay. My jaw drops whenever I go to an event and I see some of the most intricate, elaborate, and spot-on work ever. I marvel at the time, effort, and moolah it must’ve taken to create these homages to pop culture icons. Me? I just hope I’m good enough to get recognized and maybe have a photo op or two. My two previous attempts at cosplay were Kitana (circa MK II) and C. Viper, which I wore for PAX East this year. Both received decent reviews. This year, my band, Crimson, is performing at Florida Supercon, a 4-day convention featuring comic books, cartoons, voice actors, artists, and media guests---the headliner is Cary Elwes, of Princess Bride fame. ::swooooooooooon::

…But I digress. For the second year in a row, our band has been asked to play. Last year, we had a mish mosh of outfits: Spock, Nathan Explosion, Ryu, Disco Stu, Kitana…it was a bit of a mess. This year, we have decided to cosplay as a band. My four bandmates wanted to be the Ninja Turtles, which naturally led me to April O’Neil as my character: NYNY

Here are some pictures of my journey…

At first, I thought I could bleach and dye a jumpsuit from a military surplus store. Even pure bleach couldn’t budge the color. In my frustration (and not wanting to waste a sink full of yellow dye), I grabbed the nearest white button-down shirt I had and dyed it right there in my bathroom sink.

I got a pair of men’s white painter’s pants. I learned that, since the pants were 60% synthetic fabric, they’d take a lot more dye cycles to match the color achieved with one dye cycle for the shirt. It took three boxes of dye, with the last dye job in a pot of boiling water---just to make sure the pants knew I MEANT BUSINESS, AND I THAT I WAS NOT TO BE TRIFLED WITH.

Here are the costume components laid out, including a pair of black boots I spray-painted white. Lots of layers of primer and paint on those. They crack, but they get the job done. I also snagged a white belt from Goodwill.

And here is the costume! Once I get a microphone (and a better hairdo), I’ll be the epitome of a Channel 6 roving reporter, ready to help my turtle friends---and perhaps deliver them a pizza or two. What do you think?
