Intrigued by this Fall’s military shooter face-off between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Eksy gathers opinions on what most people are looking forward to. In one corner we have Battlefield 3, who’s predecessor was released back in 2005 for PC. Now coming to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Battlefield offers us a tactical approach to shooters with a squad based multiplayer. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hopes to continue the same upward momentum this franchise has seen in its years. Coupled with the release of Call of Duty Elite, Modern Warfare 3 seeks to hold the standard of being the competitive FPS of choice.

“Future of Kinect Gaming”

Since the launch of Kinect on November 4th, 2010, over 10 million units have been sold, as households across the world interacted with games and media in a new, unique way. Although the Kinect is a solid piece of tech, the games developed for the device have been geared towards the casual crowd with sports games, dancing games, fitness, and a slew of other family friendly mini-games. Now, while not a bad thing in itself, this has been leaving many core gamers wanting more substance, but thanks to this years E3 announcements, we all have many things to look forward to.

The Gunstringer

The Gunstringer is an on-rails shooter developed by Twisted Pixel originally conceptualized to be an Xbox Live Arcade title. Recently, it has expanded into a full fledged retail game, set to release in stores sometime during September. In this game, you are a puppeteer controlling an undead, cowboy, marionette using your left hand to control movement and the other to target and shoot enemies. With its unique theme and smooth gameplay, The Gunstringer has definitely become one my most anticipated Kinect games.

Mass Effect 3

NYNY

Mass Effect 3 has been a title I’ve personally been looking forward to since I completed the second game. While saddened to hear it was being pushed back to a 2012 release, I was very pleased to hear about the Kinect support it will offer. During Microsoft’s press conference, two different aspects of the game were demoed - the dialogue wheel and a combat mission.

To select dialogue all one has to do is speak it. Yes, you can still use a traditional controller if you wish, but in a role-playing game, how often do you get to really converse with your party members? Using the Kinect in combat was even more impressive. Like a true Commander Shepard, it’s now possible to call out commands to your teammates. Just say the word and your allies will move up or use special abilities.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

The demo for Ghost Recon Future Soldier caught me completely off-guard, smacked me in the face, and made me squeal with gamernerd delight. While in Gunsmith, a section of the game used to customize your weapons, hand gestures were used to scroll through and select different options. The interface is slick and the gestures alone make you feel like you’re straight out of the movie Minority Report or Gamer.

The magic happens at 2:40 as the demonstrator pulls his hands away and the gun pops apart with it. “Oooh”s and “aaaah”s are heard from the crowd as he proceeds to show us the robust customization options. Moments later, he motions as if drawing a gun and enters a target shooting mode. Here one can aim, zoom, and shoot all without the use of a controller.  Once digit tracking is enabled, this control scheme will only improve and will hopefully be a fun, alternative way to enjoy this shooter.
