To start, I’m a BIG fan of Soul Calibur. I haven’t played all the games in the series, but I have so many good memories of the games that I have played. I can remember back in high school when my best friend and I would stay up all night playing Soul Calibur 3, trying to beat the game and unlock all the character creation pieces (“Chronicles of the Sword,” anyone?). That game was the source of many inside jokes, and ever since I’ve been eager to play all the latest games in the Soul Calibur series.
I know some may knock the games, what with scantily-clad women and unrealistic fighting styles… and at first I wasn’t too keen on those things either. But to be honest, I don’t even see that stuff anymore – I find that the ridiculousness only adds to the games’ charm (plus the more ridiculous, the better the inside jokes, right?). All in all, the Soul Calibur games are always my go-to choice for fighting games.
I recently got the Soul Calibur 5 Collector’s Edition set, which comes with the game, a making-of DVD, an art book, the soundtrack, a DLC code for some exclusive character creation equipment, and a sweet game and contents case that you can put on your shelf to look like a book end. Now, I haven’t had the time to spend hours on this game yet, but I’ve beaten the story mode and I’ve come up with a few strengths and weaknesses:

I love that Soul Calibur has so many different fantasy characters to choose from, and there are tons of new ones to try out! And since Sophitia is by far my favorite character in the Soul Calibur series, I’m digging the main story since it revolves around her children (Patroklos and Pyrrha). Here are some of my favorite players to fight with…
RAPHAEL is one of my absolute favorite characters in the Soul Calibur series. I take personal pride in his fighting style and weapon choice – he really portrays some fencing technique and finesse in his moves, and the Rapier (sword) is perfect for quick and deadly action. In addition to this, his character always has an air of mystique, as you never quite know what he is, or what his objectives are. He’s also one of the few characters that, I believe, changes with every new installment of the series. From his fast-paced, combo fighting style to his slightly arrogant attitude, Raphael always keeps me coming back for more (fighting!).
PYRRAH is definitely one of my favorite characters in Soul Calibur 5. I’m not quite sure why...maybe it’s because my favorite character is Sophitia, and this is her daughter who uses her same fighting style. Or perhaps it’s because I’ve become emotionally invested in her due to the story of the game (and even though she’s whiny, she at least has a reason unlike some previous SC characters. ::coughtalimcough::). But let’s be honest, it’s probably because of her name...Pyrrah? Looks awesome, I know. Anyway, the only true downside I see to her fighting style is her lack of range. Other than that, I’d say she’s a pretty solid fighter (and cute as a button!).
EZIO is freakin’ BEAST in Soul Calibur 5. Not only does he actually “fit the part” (meaning he fits in with the Soul Calibur world, unlike some of the past guest characters), but his fighting style is quick, stealthy, and pretty powerful. My favorite move of his is the counter crossbow, where he quickly sidesteps an attack then launches a crossbow arrow into his enemy, sending them flying. With moves like this, I can see Ezio becoming a favorite character in this fighting game. Sadly, his fighting style isn’t available in character creation mode. :(
And finally, nothing beats the character creation mode in the Soul Calibur series. Check out my most recent creation! Does she look familiar?

So has anyone else tried this game yet? What are your thoughts? Do you have a favorite character or fighting style that you like to use? Oh…and send me some pictures of your custom characters!
Love and Peace,
Sabre

Seriously. Two events, one night.
So I snapped some photos while I was here, there, and everywhere, to bring the moments to you.
Shall we?
Twisted Metal Community Meet Up

The first event I hit up featured Twisted Metal. Here, the game was available to play, a tournament was being held, there was some seriously sweet cosplay, and swag given out to the droves of fans.

Main stage - Where the magic happens.

One of the many set-ups where you could duke it out against a friend and other fans of Twisted Metal.

Sweet Tooth looks scarier than usual. I guess I just have that effect on people.

A group of gamers play 4-player split screen. And let me tell you, that framerate is smoooooth.

I really dug the red mood lighting. It set the tone well for car combat mayhem. ;]

Behold - the gamer face! I swear I'm still breathing in this photo.

Lucky fans went home with lots of swag that night including...

...this table! Yeah, no kidding - this is in someone's home now.

To top it all off, I got to shake hands with one of the biggest deals in gaming, David Jaffe.

And then I scurried off with my newly acquired Twisted Metal backpack to the next venue!
Capcom Fight Club: Street Fighter X Tekken
By the time I arrived, the event was in full swing - the music was, well, bass-y, and the crowd was having an extra good time. ;]
There was a consistent line at every station to try out the game the entire night - people just couldn't get enough.

Received a poster and a t-shirt with the same imaging on it - pretty friggin' boss!

That's right - the Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken was available for play, too.

Capcom does it right equipping every station with fight sticks.
And that about wrapped up my evening!
Both of these events were completely free and open to the public. So how does one stay on top of community gatherings such as these?
First off, it totally pays to follow your favorite publisher online, via their Twitter, Facebook, official website, or blog. (The Twisted Metal event was posted to the Official Playstation Blog and the Street Fighter X Tekken Event was posted to Capcom-Unity.)
Secondly, be a part of your local gaming community. Make an effort to get to know people that game in your area - network!

Glitch Shows You Rocksmith at NAMM
A few weeks ago I went to NAMM 2012, a music merchandise show. I went to show Rocksmith to the attendees, we had the game set up in the Gibson booth. Everyone who tried it was excited about the game, no matter their level of guitar experience. Beginners like me found the game easy to grasp after a song or two. Advanced guitar players raved at the way Rocksmith gives you a fun way to pick up the guitar and learn to play new songs! Many of the show’s visitors tried the game and are intent on going home and either buying or starting their copy of the game and ready to learn new stuff. I show you some of how Rocksmith was received and some of NAMM’s show floor in this video!
<3 Glitch out!

Members of our Frag Doll community have said that the lifeblood of the PS Vita will be its games. This couldn’t be truer. After all, it’s the games that get me to invest in any gaming platform I purchase. I bought my Xbox so I could play Halo, I got my PS3 so I could play Little Big Planet and I got a Wii so I could Just Dance. I don’t think hand held devices are any different. Sony is banking on a number of AAA titles to help put their Vita into gamers hands. But I feel one of the strongest games available at launch will be Lumines Electronic Symphony.
According to PlayStation, “In 2005, Lumines was released as the number one-ranked title for the PlayStation Portable and still holds its place as one of the top five games currently available for the system”. That is amazing.
Well, fans of the game will be happy to know this classic hand held game is getting a reboot for Sony’s new PS Vita. The Vita sequel to Lumines is a brand new game but with the same enthralling fusion of interactive music and visuals. This is the first news of a PS Vita game to really pique my interest. I’ve never purchased a hand held gaming device. I have an iPhone to do all my portable gaming on but if this game really is as cool as it looks than that may have to change.

I am a lover of puzzle games. This is the perfect kind of hand held gaming experience for me. I can’t be bothered to watch epic cut scenes and follow an intricate story line while I’m waiting in line at the DMV or sitting in an airport. I need a game that’s easy to play for five minutes, but has the ability to keep me entranced for hours. This new addictive game certainly fits the bill.

The more I learn about this game the more stoked I get. According to the PlayStation blog, this game boasts quite an impressive line up of musical artists. Q Entertainment has loaded this game with tracks from some of the most significant names in electronic music history.
Here is the complete list of artists and songs that make up the 33-licensed tracks in Lumines Electronic Symphony.
